The project

Architect Elam Alexander designed the Greek Revival cottage around 1830 or 1831. It originally stood at 519 Walnut Street in Downtown Macon.

After World War II, Alfred and Mrs. Sams bought the threatened house to prevent its demolition. Every piece was numbered before dismantling, then carried about six miles northwest and rebuilt at 4596 Rivoli Drive.

W. Elliott Dunwody, Jr. directed the relocation and restoration; he was not the original designer. The rebuilt Cowles-Sams House remains a private residence and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
