The project
Dunwody & Oliphant designed Porterfield in 1928 for Macon philanthropist James Hyde Porter and his wife, Olive. The French-Tudor house combined timbering, whitewashed brick, custom joinery, and a clay-tile roof.
When the original estate faced redevelopment, the house was dismantled and moved to Wesleyan College in 2013. Dunwody/Beeland oversaw the exterior reconstruction, returning a building designed by an earlier generation of the firm to use on the campus the Porter family had long supported.
Wesleyan now uses Porter House for meetings, events, and public programs. The relocation and restoration received a preservation award from the Georgia Trust.
