The project

The pair occupies 370 and 382 Cherry Street. The five-story Sterchis building began as the J.P. Allen Co. Department Store; its four-story neighbor housed a wholesale dry-goods business and later became associated with Kessler’s.

The rehabilitation placed loft apartments on the upper floors and kept commercial space at street level. Brick walls, tall windows, and the two separate storefronts still show that these were once neighboring businesses rather than one large development.

The buildings remain in residential and commercial use as Sterchi Kessler Lofts, within walking distance of Downtown Macon restaurants, offices, and entertainment.
