The project

The building had served as a residence, restaurant, and offices before Mercer University adapted it for the McDuffie Center for Strings. The new program combines dedicated practice rooms and faculty offices with an intimate performance hall.

An elevator and restroom additions provide accessible use without discarding the building’s historic character. The work followed the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Historic Rehabilitation and qualified for historic tax credits.
